All of these need approval from each member state before the patent will be covered in their respective regions.

If you go for an American patent, the most common is the utility patent. This covers most mechanical inventions along with improvements to existing items. These are good for only 17 years. Once the American patent has been filed, the ones overseas are easier to submit and be accepted.

The form that must be filed with the USPTO is the EFS-Web fillable forms. These are electronic forms that can be submitted so your patent can be reviewed and a decision can be rendered.
